How High is Too High? When you should call 911 for High Blood Pressure

There are two types of hypertensive crises:

  • Both require immediate attention!

  • Appropriate course of action is determined by status and symptoms of organ function

    • chest pain, shortness of breath, back pain, numbness/weakness, change in vision or difficulty speaking

 

Hypertensive Urgency:

  • BP is 180/120 or greater (repeatedly), you are NOT having symptoms of target organ damage.

  • Same reading or higher after 5 Min.

 

Hypertensive Emergency

  • BP is 180/120 or greater, you ARE having symptoms of target organ damage!

  • DO NOT WAIT! Call 911

 

Tips

  • Keep in contact with your primary care provider!

  • Take your medications as prescribed!

  • Take and track your blood pressure regularly!
