Smoking is a proven risk factor for heart attack and stroke.

  • Smoking and exposure to secondhand smoke increase the risk for the buildup of plaque inside the arteries (atherosclerosis).

    • Plaque may partially or totally block blood flow through large- or medium-sized arteries in the heart, brain, pelvis, legs, arms or kidneys.

  • Continued use will keep your blood pressure higher.
