Don't be salty! Lower your Sodium!

Sodium Increases your Blood Pressure!

  • Sodium attracts and holds water, increasing the volume of blood in the arteries and veins.

  • Causing the heart to work harder to pump blood through the vessels, raising your blood pressure.

Sodium causes Fluid Retention!

  • Excessive sodium intake can also contribute to fluid retention, causing swelling in the extremities and potentially leading to conditions like edema.

Tips to Lower Sodium

  • Daily Sodium Intake:

    • The AHA recommends that adults limit their salt intake to around 1,500 milligrams (mg) per day.  (3/4 tsp.)

  • Processed Foods and Restaurant Meals:

    • The daily amount of sodium often comes from processed and restaurant-prepared foods.

    • Check food labels and choose fresh, whole foods that can help reduce sodium intake.

  • Cooking with Less Salt:

    • Using herbs, spices, and other flavorings in cooking can add taste without relying heavily on salt.

Keep In Mind

Sodium needs can vary based on age, health conditions, and physical activity levels.  Consult with a healthcare professional or a registered dietitian if you have questions.
