Two children smile in front of a chalkboard menu listing farm produce. One child holds a basket of eggs, and the other holds a chicken.

Summer is the perfect time to enjoy fresh, locally grown foods. Farmers markets and roadside stands are filled with colorful fruits and vegetables picked at their peak flavor and nutrition. Choosing local produce not only supports area farmers and small businesses, but it can also help your family enjoy healthier meals and discover new seasonal favorites.

Eating “farm to table” at home doesn’t have to be complicated. Start small by adding one or two fresh, in-season ingredients to your meals each week. Fresh berries, leafy greens, cucumbers, tomatoes, sweet corn, and herbs are all great summer options that can be used in salads, wraps, snacks, and side dishes.

Shopping local can also be a fun family activity. Visiting a farmers market gives children and adults the opportunity to learn where food comes from, try new foods, and connect with the community. Plus, produce that is grown locally often travels less distance, helping it stay fresher longer.

One easy way to enjoy seasonal produce is with this refreshing Berry Spinach Salad recipe:
