Hyper-what-now? What is Hypertension?

High Blood Pressure:

  • High blood pressure (hypertension) is when your blood pressure is consistently too high.

  • Blood Pressure is the force of your blood pushing against the walls of your blood vessels.

 

There are NO defining symptoms for Hypertension.

  • Normal: <120/80 mmHg

  • Elevated: 120-129 over <80 mmHg

  • Hypertension Stage 1: 130-139/80-89 mmHg

  • Hypertension Stage 2: ≥140/ ≥90 mmHg

  • Hypertensive Crisis: >180 over >120 mmHg

  • The only way to know if you have high blood pressure is to be diagnosed by a doctor and regularly check your blood pressure.

 

Who is at risk?

  • 50% of adult Americans, both men and women, can develop Hypertension.

  • Typically, between the ages of 40 to 60 is when it can start.

  • After 65 yrs. of age, women are more likely to get hypertension them men.

  • African Americans tend to develop high b/p more often. (57%)

  • Asian (46%)

  • Caucasian (44%)

  • Hispanic (40%)
